  • From 12 Newchurch holiday cottage, head down into Barley village. Turn right onto Barley Road, and after passing the main car park you’ll see a small road on the left called Narrowgates.
  • Follow Narrowgates all the way as you pass Whitehough and eventually reach a stone bridge. The road at this stage heads uphill (where you can also rejoin Barley Road to walk down into Roughlee via Thorneyholme) but go through through the kissing gate just after the bridge on the left.
  • Continue along the riverside until you eventually emerge on the corner of Blacko Bar Road. Follow the road and river towards Roughlee Primary School and follow the river as far as you wish, or alternatively turn right to head back up towards Newchurch — either directly up Jinny Lane or via the Vicars’ Walk route.
  • As an alternative route, before you reach the stone bridge at Whitehough, turn left to go up through the houses. Follow the road as it heads right, and before you reach Whitehough Outdoor Centre you’ll see a footpath heading into the woods on the right. Follow this footpath through the woods, emerging to either head up the hill to join the Stang Top route or down the hill to emerge at Blacko Bar Road in Roughlee.
